Branding Yourself As An Expert When You’re A Newbie

If the idea of you being an expert at anything is outside of you comfort zone you are not alone. Most people I talk to feel that way. Most people I know do not consider themselves an expert at anything much less an industry expert even when there is a lot of proof saying that they are.

Are you wilng to take some time and research a specialty or niche for yourself? To work tirelessly to increase your skills and knowledge of the writing business?

By that definition everyone is an expert at something. But what if you say you are an kelly self help paper and someone asks you a question you don’t know? If this happens you give them a quizzical look, pause for a moment and say “You know as simple as that question is I don’t think I’ve ever been asked that before. Let me look into it and I’ll get back to you.” This works extremely well for two reasons; the first is it shows you are humble enough to admit you don’t know the answer and the second is that you are making a commitment to give them the answer later. People respect that.

Retrieve your first draft and make whatever necessary changes you have come up with. Now you have the final draft (manuscript) which can be taken for editing. The proofreading is simply carrying out a spelling and grammar check, which you can do on your own, but the editing needs to be done professionally if you want the book to succeed in publishing. Find an agency that does this kind of work or an individual editor with a good track record.

Connect it to real life. When you do this step and the next one, your book club becomes an intentional, strategic learning tool. Remember that the end it isn’t about the book, it is about what we can learn from the book. Make sure the conversation talks about how the principles, examples and ideas in the book connect to real life and work.

So you should find out what the writer’s area of expertise/specialization is – and then ask for something else. Yup, have the writer write on a topic she knows absolutely nothing about.

Schools, colleges – trade schools could all hire teachers to teach – online. Same jobs – different venue. Teachers would certainly be safer. Kids would not have to worry about guns or drugs at virtual schools. It’s all coming anyway, only we ought to be the first to recognize it.and capitalize on it.
